How do solar panels work?

  • The sun gives off light, even on cloudy days.

  • Photovoltaic (PV) cells on the solar panels turn the light into DC electricity.

  • The DC electricity flows into the inverter, which converts it into AC electricity ready to use.

  • The electricity flows through a smart meter then into the home’s consumer unit (fuse box).

  • Plug in, switch on, and use. Your home will automatically use the free generated electricity first.

  • If all the electricity isn’t consumed by the home, the excess will flow back into the National Grid automatically.

  • If more electricity is required than the solar system is generating, this will be taken from the National Grid.
